Cookie policy

The short answer

This site does not place cookies on your device. No non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising, personalisation, social media) are used; that is why we show no cookie consent banner.

How are visit statistics collected?

We use the Web Analytics service of Vercel, which hosts the site. According to Vercel's documentation, the service uses no cookies: visitors are counted with a hash generated from the incoming request that resets automatically after 24 hours; this value cannot be used to track you across days or across websites. Your IP address is not stored. The information collected is limited to: time of visit, page address, referring site, country/city, browser, operating system and device type. We only ever see this data as aggregate numbers ("1,200 visitors this month, most read page: My first competition").

Third-party content

The site has no embedded content that sets cookies (video players, maps, social media plugins, reCAPTCHA). The "Open in map" link on competition pages takes you to Google Maps in a new tab, where that site's own policy applies. The same goes for the WCA, Instagram and other external links.

Forms

The contact form and the newsletter sign-up use no cookies. For the information you provide in these forms, see the Privacy Notice.

Theme preference

The light or dark theme you pick with the sun/moon button at the top right is kept only in your browser's local storage (localStorage). It is not a cookie; it is not sent to the server and does not identify you. If you clear your browser data, the site follows your operating system setting again.

Content editor

The content editor at /keystatic, used by the team that updates the site, places a session cookie only in the browser of team members who sign in with GitHub; the pages visitors see set no such cookie.

If this policy changes

If we ever add a feature that requires cookies, this page will be updated; no non-essential cookie will be placed without your explicit consent.
